The color of diamonds

El color de los diamantes

Part of the value given to a diamond is its transparency or lack of color. This valuation that has traditionally been given responds to the rarity or uniqueness of a colorless diamond.

Typically, a diamond tends to be slightly yellow, due to the presence of hydrogen atoms in its structure. The complete absence of color in diamond is very rare and therefore a completely colorless stone is given more value .

Current trends continue to value the absence of color and the rarity of color. Although high jewelry today is influenced by trends in fashion and design and this means that color in all its splendor is beginning to enter high jewelry collections that are designed with colored diamonds.

Mimoke, Ethical High Jewelry, today in its created diamond collection, maintains the transparency and timeless beauty of a classic diamond jewelry. The transparency of the diamonds in the Mimoke collection is classified as type G, a “transparency” that is classified as excellent and is delivered with an IGI certificate.

The color of a diamond is measured with a scale that goes from the letter D (colorless) to Z (yellow or brown) (GIA scale - Gemological Institute of America) between colors that have several degrees of difference (for example, between F and I). However, this is even more difficult to observe once they are set in your jewel.

How to see the color of a diamond

To see the color of a diamond, you must observe it “in profile” against a white background and under “day white” light. In this way, we will prevent the diamond's brilliance from dazzling us and we will be able to see its color.

Only an expert under special lighting conditions can distinguish close color degrees (e.g., between F and G), but with a little practice most people can tell the difference between colors that are several degrees apart (e.g. example, between F and I). However, it is more difficult to observe the color of a diamond once it is set in its jewel.

Fancy Colors or Fancy Diamonds or Colored Diamonds

The colored diamonds called 'Fancy' stand out for the intense yellow, blue, pink, green or brown with which they can be found in the few existing mines. While diamonds are difficult gems to find, it is even rarer to find one that has a naturally vivid color. Putting it in figures: 'Fancy Diamonds' represent 0.01% of the total diamond production worldwide, this is the main characteristic of 'fancy diamonds', being considered highly valued by the most expert collectors.
